Memorizing information is part of school. At some point, you will need to memorize information like the meaning of vocabulary for a foreign language, countries on a map, or formulas of common chemical compounds. Although memorizing facts can seem overwhelming, don't panic! Look over the list below, select three of the memory strategies, and give them a try when studying for your next test.

Make it Rhyme: 5 met 4 at 20's door (5 x 4 = 20)

Use a Mnemonic or Acrostic: ROY G. BIV (colors of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet)

Create a Visual: Draw a picture that reminds you of the word or concept (plait - draw a cartoon of a girl with a long braid carrying a plate)

Sing a Song: Make up a song and set it to a common tune (Sung to "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" - Square, triangle, pentagon; Polygons are all three; Circles have no corners or sides; So polygons they can't be)

Chunk It: Break facts into smaller amounts, look for patterns (Phone numbers written in groups of 3-3-4 are easier to remember then if all ten numbers were strung together)

Storytelling: Create a silly story using the vocabulary or concepts you need to know.

Graphic Organizers & Timelines: Use graphic organizers and timelines to create a visual picture of how facts relates to each other.

Use Color: Color code facts (identify parts of speech by assigning a color - all nouns are red, verbs are blue)

Move!: Associate a movement with each fact you need to remember; pace while you recite facts; bounce a ball once as you say each fact; "write" the fact in the air with your finger

Create Your Own Technique:

See which of the three strategies you find the most helpful. Next time you need to memorize facts, use the strategy that you liked the best and try two new ones. Do this until you find at least three ways to memorize that work for you!
