Debate teams were chosen in Mrs. Zander's Social Studies class. The topic to be discussed was the implications of the rapid growth in communications technologies. Before the teams were created, four students were polled for their thoughts on the issue.

Paulette: The Internet is providing an entirely new way of obtaining information quickly that was not available to our parents. They had to obtain information by doing a lot of research that was only available through books and the media, and information on a specific topic was sometimes difficult to obtain.

Jim: The Internet now provides the ability to communicate instantly with friends or businesses all over the world rather than relying on traditional, slower mail with the postal service or expensive long distance telephone calls. It can, however, cause a loss of employment for postal workers and telephone operators as the inevitable downsizing in those sectors occurs.

Abigail: The Internet may well provide a lot of benefits. It does, however, provide criminals with another tool to access credit card information, or to sell prohibited materials that are against the law, such as drugs and pornography.

Todd: Communication technologies which bring the world closer together, such as the Internet, can only provide a better understanding of the differences in culture and ideologies. This in turn can only lead to more respect to one another, which is a great step towards the ultimate goal of world peace.
