Pope Innocent III (1160-1216) called for the Fourth Crusade. It started with the Crusaders destroying a Catholic town and thus being ex-communicated. The crusaders then went on to Constantinople ultimately destroying libraries and collections of art. The Venetians managed to salvage a fragment of the "True Cross" and part of the head of John the Baptist.
