Pros and Cons of Obamacare

Few political issues have raised as much controversy as the question of Obamacare, or, as it is officially known, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. From its very inception, the act has created debate and argument on both sides. The majority of these arguments have been valid, reasonable, and supported by statistics. In part, this is due to the fact that the act is so incredibly complicated that virtually any group can pick and choose the facts that will support their specific stance.

The purpose of Obamacare is fairly straightforward: to ensure all Americans have access to affordable health insurance by offering consumer discounts on government-sponsored health insurance plans, and expanding federal government assistance to a wider group of earners. The Act was additionally designed to reduce overall health care costs in this country, a significant financial burden for many people. Preventive services were to be performed at no cost. In addition, most people could no longer be denied coverage for any pre-existing conditions. Few, if any, citizens would deny that these are noble aspirations.

However, the plan has been riddled with glitches from the beginning. Millions of people have lost their company-sponsored health care plans. A number of businesses simply could not financially meet the new insurance requirements. People who do not comply with Obamacare may find themselves fined when tax time rolls around in the spring. Yet, the web sites established to help them file the proper papers have continuously crashed or been inaccessible. Finally, in order to fund a project of this size, tax rates have been raised on millions of moderately wealthy families throughout the country.
