Prefixes: EN, EM

Prefixes: EN, EM

Woohoo!

Great job!

You're awesome!

You can do it!

What do all of those phrases have in common? They're all phrases designed to encourage and empower you, but that's not what this lesson is about. Well, actually, it is about the words encourage and empower, but not for the reasons you may think.

Encourage and empower are words that contain the prefixes en- and em-.

A prefix is a word or group of letters that is placed at the beginning of a word. It helps change the meaning of the word.

En- and em- are prefixes that mean "to cause" or "put into". So when you encourage someone, you cause them to have courage or put courage into them. When you empower someone, you cause them to have power.
