Concrete Poetry

Concrete Poetry

Rectangle - Color
It has four sides and four angles
All of the angles are right angles
Two sides longer than other sides

What do you notice about the short poem above? If you look closely, you'll notice that not only does it describe a rectangle, it also looks somewhat like a rectangle. This type of poem is called a concrete poem.

A concrete poem, also known as a shape poem, is a poem that is written in a shape. The shape of the poem is related to the subject of the poem. Not only does the shape make the poem more interesting, but it also can help add meaning to the poem.

Here's an example:

Firefighters

Up________and
down the ladder
the_______men
risk their lives to
get________near
those trapped on
the_________top
floors of buildings
with________the
flames in the way
they_______work
to save many lives.

Did you notice the shape of the poem?

The video below will show you more examples of concrete poems. After you watch it, try to write a concrete poem of your own.
