The Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance was an important period for art, music, and literature. Some of today's best-known African-American authors and poets, including Langston Hughes emerged during the Harlem Renaissance.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar summed it up well when he said:
"That's when I first gained an appreciation of the Harlem Renaissance, a time when African-Americans rose to prominence in American culture. For the first time, they were taken seriously as artists, musicians, writers, athletes, and as political thinkers."
