Dramatic Irony
Dramatic Irony

Imagine this.
You're sitting in the movie theater. It's a horror movie. You watch the killer climb in a basement window. Then one of the characters decides to walk down the basement stairs. You put down your popcorn and start to yell, "Don't do it!" But it's too late. The killer has appeared and the character dies.
You just experienced a moment of dramatic irony.
Dramatic irony is when the audience, viewer, or reader knows something that the characters don't. It can be suspenseful, like in a horror movie, or humorous, like in a hidden camera show.
The practice questions and video below will introduce you to more elements of dramatic irony.
