It's like rain on your wedding day.
It's like a free ride when you've already paid.
It's the good advice that you just didn't take.
These are all examples from Alanis Morisette's famous song, "Ironic," but are these situations really ironic? Sort of. They all include an element of something unexpected, but irony often goes a bit deeper than that.
Irony is when a writer or speaker presents the opposite of what is expected. It is usually done to provide humor or a dramatic element.
