If you have a question to ask, chances are you need an interrogative pronoun.
Interrogative pronouns are pronouns that are used to help ask questions.
Interrogative pronouns are typically found at the beginning of a sentence.
There are five main interrogative pronouns:
WHAT
- What do you want?
- What did you get?
WHICH
- Which is yours?
- Which do you prefer?
WHO
- Who are you?
- Who did you come to see?
WHOM
- To whom are you referring?
- To whom should I give the package?
WHOSE
- Whose are these?
- Whose do you like best?
When used in a question, they are typically followed by a verb. If they are followed by a noun, they are an interrogative adjective.
- Whose side are you on? - Interrogative adjective
- Whose do you prefer? - Interrogative pronoun
- Which shirt do you like best? - Interrogative adjective
- Which do you like best? - Interrogative pronoun
You can also form interrogative pronouns by adding -ever and -soever to the ends of the words.
- Whatever do you mean?
