Interrogative Pronouns

Interrogative Pronouns

If you have a question to ask, chances are you need an interrogative pronoun.

Interrogative pronouns are pronouns that are used to help ask questions.

Interrogative pronouns are typically found at the beginning of a sentence.

There are five main interrogative pronouns:

WHAT
  • What do you want?
  • What did you get?
WHICH
  • Which is yours?
  • Which do you prefer?
WHO
  • Who are you?
  • Who did you come to see?
WHOM
  • To whom are you referring?
  • To whom should I give the package?
WHOSE
  • Whose are these?
  • Whose do you like best?

When used in a question, they are typically followed by a verb. If they are followed by a noun, they are an interrogative adjective.

  • Whose side are you on? - Interrogative adjective
  • Whose do you prefer? - Interrogative pronoun

  • Which shirt do you like best? - Interrogative adjective
  • Which do you like best? - Interrogative pronoun

You can also form interrogative pronouns by adding -ever and -soever to the ends of the words.

  • Whatever do you mean?

Next time you ask a question, you can put interrogative pronouns to good use.
