Abstract Nouns
Abstract Nouns

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all
The lines above are from a poem written by Emily Dickinson. She wrote about hope. Hope is a noun, but it is not easy to describe. You can't see it. You can't smell it. You can't taste it. You can't hear it. You can't touch it.
Nouns like hope are abstract nouns. An abstract noun is a noun that cannot be experienced with the five senses. They include words like hope, wealth, fantasy, joy, and more.
The practice questions and video below will introduce you to more abstract nouns.
