An abbreviation is a shorter way to write a word.We use abbreviations for many different words, including words related to time and place.
For example, if you wanted to send a letter to 123 Main Street in Lake Stevens, Washington, you might address the envelope this like:
123 Main St.
Lake Stevens, WA 98258
Instead of writing out the words Street and Washington, you can abbreviate them with St. and WA.
