Points, Rays, and Lines

Points, Rays, and Lines

Summer - SunIntroduction: A sunbeam starts at the sun. It travels away from the sun in a straight path. It travels forever in that straight path through space. This is why we can see stars in the sky at night. The beams of light from the stars have traveled huge distances through space! A beam of sunlight is like a ray in geometry. It has a starting point, but then goes on forever.

  • A point is an exact location. We often think of a point as a dot. In math, a point is a place, not a thing!

Line KL A line is a straight path that goes on forever in two directions.

Segment AB A line segment is part of a line. It has two end points. It does not go on forever.

Ray GH A ray is a line with one end point. It starts at a point and goes on forever in one direction.

Directions for This Lesson: In this lesson, you will learn about points, lines, line segments, and rays. First, try the practice questions to determine what you already know. Then, watch the video lesson to learn more. Finally, try what you learned in the activity and practice sections.
