What is Suspense?

What is Suspense?

Imagine you're riding on a roller coaster. At the beginning of the roller coaster, you slowly make your way up a big hill. As you creep higher and higher up the hill, chances are you aren't thinking about how far off the ground you are. Instead, you're anticipating the big drop once you reach the top of the hill. The taller the hill, the bigger the anticipation.

Suspense in a story is a lot like that climb to the top of a roller coaster.

Writers use suspense to keep a reader interested. They also use suspense to set a certain mood and make a reader guess what is going to happen.

Suspense is often found in mysteries, but it can be found in other types of stories too.

The practice questions and video will help you learn a little more about suspense.
