What is Genre?

You're reading a story that takes place on another planet. It is full of aliens, flying cars, and advanced technology. From these details alone you can tell that the genre of the story is science fiction.

Genre is a specific type of writing.

There are two main genres of writing: fiction and non-fiction.

However, within each genre, there are many other genres.

Some genres of fiction include:
  • Science Fiction
  • Historical Fiction
  • Realistic Fiction
  • Mystery
  • Fantasy
  • Myth
  • Fable
  • Fairy Tale
  • Romance
  • Comedy

Science Fiction
Stories are based on science and technology. They may take place in an alternate dimension and include characters such as robots, aliens, and super humans.

Historical Fiction
Stories are set in the past. They are often based on real people and events, but embellish the truth or make up details about what happened.

Realistic Fiction
Stories involve everyday people facing everyday problems. Readers feel like the same problems could happen to them.

Mystery
Stories are suspenseful and often involve a problem or crime that must be solved. Characters include detectives, witnesses, and criminals.

Fantasy
Stories are often set in magical worlds. They are make-believe and would not happen in real life. Characters may include fairies, wizards, witches, and talking animals or other objects that can talk.

Myth
Myths are stories that were made up to explain how something came to be. They often include elements of fantasy and may include gods and goddesses, as well as talking animals.

Fables
Fables are stories with a moral. They are often very short and use animals to teach humans a lesson.

Fairy Tales
Fairy tales are fantasy stories that often begin with "Once upon a time..." or are set "in a faraway land." They frequently include princes and princesses.
