Forms of Poetry

Forms of Poetry

Back To School - Notebook

Poems come in many different types.

Some poems are short, some poems are long.

Some poems rhyme, some poems do not.

The look or type of a poem is called the poem's form. The form of a poem can determine:
  • the number of lines in a poem
  • the number of syllables per line
  • how the lines of a poem are organized
  • the poem's rhyme scheme
  • the subject of the poem

Some forms of poetry include: ballad, haiku, cinquain, concrete, acrostic, sonnet, ode, limerick, and free verse.

The practice questions and video will introduce you to the most common forms of poetry.
