Informational Text Structure

Informational Text Structure

Do you have a dresser or closet where you organize your clothes? Maybe you have a drawer just for your underwear and a drawer just for shirts. Maybe you organize everything by color. Just like people often organize their clothes, writers organize their writing.

The way an author organizes a piece of writing is called text structure or text organization. Text structure, or text organization, tell a reader how ideas are organized in a piece of writing.

There are five main types of text structure:
  • Cause and Effect
  • Problem and Solution
  • Compare and Contrast
  • Description
  • Sequence

Nearly every informational text that is written follows one of these structures.

The practice questions and video below will help you learn more about each type of text organization and explain how they are used.
