Euphemisms

Euphemisms

When you want to sweeten a cup of tea, you add a few lumps of sugar.

When you want to sweeten something you have to say, you use a euphemism.

A euphemism is a phrase used to make something that is blunt or harsh sound a little better.

For example:
Instead of saying someone died, you may say they went to sleep.
Instead of saying you have been fired, you may say you were downsized.

Euphemisms have a more positive connotation or feeling than the phrases they replace.

The practice questions and video below will introduce you to more euphemisms and ways you can use them.
