Determiners

Determiners

When you're writing or speaking, sometimes it's hard to figure out what a sentence is talking about.

"Did they mean that dog?"

"Which house are they referring to?"

Determiners are words that help make what you are trying to say clearer.

They include parts of speech such as articles (a, an, the) and demonstratives (this, that, these, those). When you use a determiner, you help the reader or the person you are talking to know which one you are referring to.

Determiners can be general or specific.

General determiners do not refer something specific.
  • I want A dog, but not A specific dog.

Specific determiners do refer to a particular thing.
  • I want THAT dog, THE dog in the window.

The practice questions and video below will help you learn more about how to use determiners to clear up your writing and speaking.
