What are Conjunctions?

What are Conjunctions?

Number Plus - Color

In math, when you want to connect two numbers together, you use a plus sign: 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, and so on.

In English, when you want to connect two words, sentences, or ideas together you use a conjunction: peanut butter and jelly, green eggs and ham, salt or pepper, and so on.

A conjunction is a connecting word. It helps you connect two words, sentences, or ideas.

There are seven basic conjunctions:
  • For
  • And
  • Nor
  • But
  • Or
  • Yet
  • So

You can remember the basic conjunctions using the acronym FANBOYS.

The practice questions and video below will help you learn more about how and when to use these seven basic conjunctions.
