Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

And the award goes to...

Imagine it's the end of the school year and your teacher asks you to come up with a list of superlatives to describe the students in your class.
  • Who is the fastest runner?
  • Who is the loudest talker?
  • Who is the friendliest person?
  • Who is the oldest in the class?
  • Who is the best writer?

All of the underlined words in the questions above are superlative adjectives. Along with comparative adjectives, they are a type of adjective you use when you want to compare one noun to another noun.

For example:

Person - Small Person - Medium Person - Large

Lee is tall. Laura is taller. Lincoln is tallest.

Think of it as giving awards for first, second, and third place. In this case, Lincoln would take first place for being the tallest.

The practice questions and video below will go into more detail about how to use comparative and superlative adjectives.
