Characterization in Literature

Sophia was a very friendly person. She would wave hello to every person she met. She made a lot of friends that way too. All of Sophia's friends thought she was great.
"Sophia, you're the best friend in the world," her best friend Maria always told her.
Wow, Sophia sounds like a great person! How do I know that? Because the author took time to tell me.
When an author describes a character, it is called characterization. An author can reveal details about a character in many different ways, including through:
- What the character says
- What the character does
- What others say about the character
- The character's appearance and possessions
- The character's thoughts or feelings
- The author's direct descriptions of a character
