Metaphors and Similes

Metaphors and Similes

Animal - Bee

If you were asked to compare yourself to this bee, how might you describe yourself?

  • I'm as busy as a bee.
  • I'm a worker bee, droning on and on all day.
  • I'm the queen bee of this house.
  • When I breathe, my nose buzzes just like a bee.

When you describe yourself like this, you're using metaphors and similes. These are both types of figurative language - language that helps describe things using very vivid images.

When you use a metaphor, you say that something IS something else.
  • She is a race horse, running to finish first.
  • I am a fly listening on the wall.

When you use a simile, you that that something is like or as something else.
  • She works as fast as a race horse.
  • I am like a fly listening on the wall.

The following practice questions and video will help you learn a little more about metaphors and similes.
