Metaphors and Similes
Metaphors and Similes

If you were asked to compare yourself to this bee, how might you describe yourself?
- I'm as busy as a bee.
- I'm a worker bee, droning on and on all day.
- I'm the queen bee of this house.
- When I breathe, my nose buzzes just like a bee.
When you describe yourself like this, you're using metaphors and similes. These are both types of figurative language - language that helps describe things using very vivid images.
When you use a metaphor, you say that something IS something else.
- She is a race horse, running to finish first.
- I am a fly listening on the wall.
When you use a simile, you that that something is like or as something else.
- She works as fast as a race horse.
- I am like a fly listening on the wall.
