Elements of a Short Story
Elements of a Short Story

It was a dark and story night...
Once upon a time...
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...
What do all these famous story openers have in common? They all describe the setting of a story.
The setting is just one of five key elements ever story has. Those elements are:
- Setting
- Characters
- Plot
- Conflict
- Theme
Leave one element out of the story out and readers will start asking questions, such as:
- What's going on?
- Where does this story take place?
- Who said that?
- What is this story about?
- Why is this story important?
Think you already know all about these story elements? Try your hand at the practice questions. Then, to learn more about the elements of a story and how to use them in your own stories, watch the video below.
