Relative Pronouns

Relative Pronouns

Martin liked to ask questions.

"Whose mom is that?"

"What book is that?"

"Which grandma are you talking about?"

To help keep Martin from asking so many questions, his family members started to use relative pronouns when they talked. By using relative pronouns, they were able to add descriptions to their sentences and keep Martin from bothering them with so many questions.

When you use words like he, she, they, and it, you're using pronouns. When you use words like who, whom, whose, that, and which, you're also using pronouns.

The pronouns mentioned above (he, she, they, it, who, whom, whose, that, and which) are called relative pronouns. Relative pronouns are words you use when you want to add a description or short modifier to provide more information about something.

What does that mean?

You could write: The book is due tomorrow.
Or you could write: The book that I borrowed from the library is due tomorrow.

The word that is a relative pronoun. You use it to help you add more information about the book.

See how much your already know about relative pronouns by going through the practice questions, and then watch the video to learn more.
