According to government sources, homeless populations fall into two general categories: those who experience brief episodes of homelessness caused by poverty, and those who experience chronic homelessness as a result of disabilities, substance addiction, and/or mental disorders.
Historically, homeless populations have been predominantly male, but an increasing number of families are becoming homeless. Some of the reasons behind the rising numbers of homeless women and children include domestic violence, lack of public welfare benefits, and a decline in marriage among low-income people.
Homeless children often face unreliable medical care, education, and home environments. This can result in developmental delays, emotional and/or behavioral problems, and a higher risk for school expulsion and placement in foster care.
