Exploring Nouns
Exploring Nouns
For most of your life, you've probably known that a noun is a person, place, or thing, but nouns are much more complex than that. It's time to take your knowledge of nouns to the next level!
Within the category of nouns, you have:
- Common (Ex. teacher) and Proper (Ex. Mr. Cook) nouns
- Singular (Ex. shoe) and Plural (Ex. shoes) nouns
- Concrete (Ex. gorilla) and Abstract (Ex. beauty) nouns
- Nouns that can be Counted (Ex. Cookies) and Non-Counted (Ex. Cheese)
In addition to coming in different types, nouns can also serve different functions in a sentence:
- Subjects (Ex. Mom ate the popcorn.)
- Subject Complements (Ex. The popcorn is a snack.)
- Direct Objects (Ex. Mom ate the popcorn.)
- Indirect Objects (Ex. Mom gave Fido the popcorn.)
- Objects of Prepositions (Ex. Fido dropped the popcorn on the floor.)
